Interests

Broadly I am interested in computational science for research that relies on simulations run on modern supercomputers, including topics such as numerical modelling, infrastructure, (big) data, metadata and workflows. Generally in this area we are working towards preparing digital infrastructure for the approaching 'exascale era' of performance.

Specifically, my work concerns tools and infrastructure that facilitate the running, configuration, documenting and analysis of simulations of our planet for atmospheric science. In this way, I support the likes of climate modelling, hydrological modelling and numerical weather prediction.

Professionally, I aim to champion openness of research artefacts including open-source software, use of (meta)data standards, and skill- and community-building for high-performance computing.

Short Biography

I am a Computational Scientist working for the Computational Modelling Services (CMS) group within the National Centre for Atmospheric Science (NCAS), based at the Dept. of Meteorology at the University of Reading. My work largely involves developing, optimising and maintaining open-source Python tools that support research and collaboration in Earth Science, particularly climate modelling.

Prior to this role I spent two years as a Scientific Software Engineer at the Met Office where my work had a similar form and aim, following a master's degree in (particle) physics which activated my interest in high-performance computing and research software engineering.
