Short Biography

I am currently technical coordinator for ELIXIR-UK, the pan-European informatics infrastructure that supports life sciences. As part of this I get exposed to all the technological aspects underpinning research projects in bioinformatics, I develop policies for best practices and have developed a metrics framework to measure the impact of ELIXIR core resources. I am also the project coordinator of BioJS, the open source library for visualisation of biological data. This is an open source project that involves more than 40 active developers and contains over a hundred pieces for software that can be reused, combined and extended. I am also the chair of the technical committee for GOBLET (the Global Organisation for Bioinformatics Learning, Education and Training). As a result of this we have created an open portal for sharing of bioinformatics training materials.

I am involved in a number of community outreach events, primarily to evangelise the need for best practices and the mandates that ELIXIR proposes for bioinformatics research software. In addition I have organised a number of events and tutorials, focused on web visualisation, engaging industrial partners.

Recently I have also led the creation of a consortium called Bio-COGNAc to come up with a standard for interoperability between visual analytics workflow management systems, including Galaxy.
