Short Biography | I am a software developer at Culham Centre for Fusion Energy (the nuclear fusion research arm of the UKAEA) supporting researchers on the European and domestic experiments, JET and MAST. My team writes, maintains and supports software and databases covering the whole pipeline from raw machine data to high level analysis and visualisation tools. We work closely with researchers to make sure the software meets their needs, to help them use it effectively, and to advise and mentor them on their own programming, software development and data analysis activities. I contribute to experiments, working in the JET control room configuring real-time control algorithms. This brings me into contact with software involved in operating the experiment, and gives me greater involvement with key members of research staff. I have a remit to improve software development practices throughout the organisation, especially amongst researchers whose code is used by others or produces official data. I jointly organise our software development training programme (FUSE) and I'm leading the initiative to adopt Git and GitLab for version control. I take an interest in policy areas such as software development careers, increasing the proportion of women in STEM areas, and promoting collaboration and knowledge sharing. |
